5 Reasons All Moms Need a Garden

My favorite flower – Gerbera Daisy! Looking at it just feels more relaxing! Down – To – Earth Dietitian Photo.

If there is one thing that can help me be a better mother, it’s having a garden.  I cherish the memories I have as a child growing up in and around our garden.  I want to create those same memories for my children, and help others create this legacy in their family as well.  In honor of Mother’s Day, here are 5 reasons all moms need a garden:

  1. Stress Relief – research has actually proven that 30 minutes of gardening can actually lower stress levels more so compared to other leisurely activities.  There is something about turning over the soil, pulling weeds and nurturing the earth that just leaves us feeling less stress.
  2. Better Brains – There is a lower risk of dementia in people who garden regularly for a period of years.  This benefit lasts well into the 60’s and 70’s.
  3. Mom”me” Time – after doing a little work in the garden, we tend to feel happier and have an improved mood.  Maybe that is part of actually being able to see what you have accomplished – standing up and take a look at all you have done.  Take a deep breath and appreciate it.  Gardening lets me just be alone and think.
  4. Healthier eating – when we grow more fruits and vegetables, we tend to eat more fruits and vegetables.  Sounds simple doesn’t it?
  5. Exercise – we all need to move a little more and gardening helps us do that.  Do you ever notice how certain muscles are sore after doing some garden work?  Feel the burn!

With all these benefits, why not garden?  Whether it’s planting a few flowers in containers (gerbera daisies and petunias are my favorite!), watering plants outside or tending to the vegetables in the garden patch, I am nurturing my soul along with the plants and that makes me a better mother.  I am thankful that my growing up years included much time in the garden.  And I will happily pass that tradition on to my own children.

My legacy!
