Best Snacks for After School

snacks for kids after school

These snacks for kids after school are all quick and easy to prepare, and they are also healthy and nutritious. They will help your kids stay energized and focused until dinner. Your kids may be elementary age, and come home after school and are hungry. Or maybe your kids are high school age and need something before sports start after school. Either way, I have some healthy snacks for kids after school.

The key to after school snacking is to partner protein and carbohydrates for an energy boost with staying power. Serve these snacks with a purpose: to fuel an afterschool activity, to boost a mid-afternoon energy drain and to boost fruit and vegetables. You don’t want snacks to interfere with the evening meal (so serve them at least two-three hours before).

Here are some quick after school snacks:

Snacks for Kids After School

  • Apples with Peanut Butter (portable too when you get the individual cups of peanut butter)
  • Yogurt with Fruit (make a mini parfait)
  • Cheese and Crackers
  • String Cheese and Grapes (There’s something about string cheese and fruit that goes naturally together. I think it’s the sweet and the salty flavors. Take a bite of cheese, pop in a grape.   Repeat. It’s a satisfying snack!)
  • Celery Sticks and Hummus (bell pepper strips, cucumber slices and carrot chips also pair well with hummus)
  • Trail Mix (try dried fruit with nuts and chocolate chips)
  • Popcorn
  • Egg Salad (buy an extra dozen eggs each week and hard cook them on Sundays, mix with chopped celery, a little light mayonnaise, mustard, salt and black pepper.  Serve with crackers and crunchy cucumber slices.)
  • Banana
  • Yogurt Popsicle
  • Smoothie (made with frozen fruit, yogurt and milk)
  • Crackers and Tuna Salad
  • Tortilla Pinwheels (meat, cheese, vegetables, rolled up into a tortilla and cut into slices – try turkey and cheese and guacamole or ham, lettuce and tomato with cream cheese)

Mini Bagel with Chicken Salad

Cook chicken breasts on the weekend and use a couple for whipping up a quick chicken salad filled with apples, dried cranberries and walnuts. Serve on a half of a whole grain mini bagel.

Chicken Salad with Cranberries

This is a great chicken salad that works on sandwiches, crackers and vegetables.
