Breakfast on the Farm: A Must-Do Family Activity

As a mom, I’ve always wanted to teach my kids more about where their food comes from. I grew up on a farm where I naturally knew the source of everything on my plate. It’s important to me to share that knowledge with my kids and that is why every year we take part in our county’s Breakfast on the Farm event.

As part of June Dairy Month, many counties in Minnesota host their own Breakfast on the Farm, an opportunity for families to visit farms and learn more about where their food comes from. Filled with fun activities and a hearty farm breakfast – we wouldn’t miss it.20130626-081525.jpg

This year it was hosted by Jim and Connie Sathre, of Adams, MN. Primarily a hog and crop farm (the same type I grew up on) and a lot of other animals, they graciously invited the public in for a peek at their farm life.  Contrary to what one might think, 97% of farms in America are family owned.

Whenever I step foot on a farm, it brings back a lot of memories, and my senses are reinvigorated with familiar smells, sights and sounds. Some of my favorite are the smell of freshly cut hay, the sounds of hogs and cattle and the wide open expanses filled with green. Simple, yet powerful, memories.

Here are my six reasons to take your family to the farm:

1. Learn about how family meals get their start – at the farm. All farm commodities, including dairy, pork, beef, soybeans and corn, were featured in booths to help families learn more about their industry. At each booth there were fun activities for the kids to help them learn more about where their food comes from. Interested in dairy? Check out my recent dairy farm tour.

2. Get a taste of farmer life! We tried goat and cow milking.

3. Test your farm knowledge and learn new facts with your family together. Every year, there is a scavenger hunt for the kids to explore the farm and learn along the way. Kids must fill out a worksheet filled with farm questions, answer them and turn it back in for a fun prize!

4. Sit on fun farm equipment. (This is the same tractor my dad has so we had to get a picture!) What’s not fun about this!

5. Interact with the animals – feed them, hold them, look at them!

6. Make memories together as a family that will last a lifetime!  Breakfast on the farm was the best.

Make memories with your family by visiting a farm – it’s a powerful and engaging way to learn and connect with your food.

We heard about this through a friend, but I was wondering if you knew if they were going to offer this more than the one time this summer!? I wanted to take Callie, but we went to the Ecoblitz that morning instead 🙁 Which was also very cool!!!
