The Busy Mom’s Guide to a Healthy Kitchen Makeover | Part 1

Let’s get right to the Healthy Kitchen Makeover.  This is the Busy Mom’s Guide to a Healthy Kitchen Makeover after all.  You might have just looked in your cabinets and thought “what have I done?”  Or you might have served something you thought you would never serve to your family.  Either way, I want to give you the tools to start the Healthy Kitchen Makeover right now.  The first thing to do though is follow these steps to help you focus on what it is you really want to accomplish here.

Getting Started on Your Healthy Kitchen Makeover

Busy Mom's Guide to a Healthy Kitchen Makeover

To begin your Healthy Kitchen Makeover, you need to get really clear on what it is you want to accomplish.   Just like anything you really want to go after, I recommend you start with a quick self-assessment you can do while you are cooking dinner tonight.  Once you have this complete, you will be able to move forward with the next step (more on that in a future blog post).  Forget the guilt over this any longer — and just do it.

What are you focusing on?

First, what is it that you want and why?  If you had to lay out a vision of family meals and the food available when you open the cabinets or the refrigerator door, what does it include?  What does the ideal family breakfast or dinner look like?  What foods are available when you pull open the snack drawer?

This is where you need to get hyper-focused on what it is you do want. Because when you know what you want, everything becomes clear.  When you know your focus, you know what is in and what is out.

What is getting in the way?

Time to be honest.  You know that stuff you hide because you don’t want anyone to see it?  Or that cooking tool that you wish you had that prevents you from doing what you want to do?  Lay it all out there.

What needs to be removed?

You already know what this is.  I really believe you do!  Just list it out!

What should be added?

I’m sure you are thinking about foods you wish you loved to eat or foods you wish you knew how to cook so your family would eat them.  Make that list.  It doesn’t have to be long, but please let it be real.

What do you need to say yes to?

Maybe it’s more fruits and vegetables (remember that goal is five a day) or maybe it’s adding a whole grain to meals.  Or maybe you would like to get dinner on the table in 30 minutes or less? Maybe it’s actually having a meal plan.  What do you need to start doing from this point forward?

What do you need to say no to?

The hardest part of any new change is actually making the decision.  Once the decision is made, everything can fall into place.  So, what are you going to let go of?  Our thoughts control our beliefs and our beliefs control our actions.  If we think we can’t do something, we won’t believe we can, and we won’t.  But on the flip side, if we think we can make healthier choices, then we will believe we can, and we will.  What are you going to finally decide to say no to?

Where should you invest your time, money, energy, and resources?

This is where you take action.  What are you willing to do to make your kitchen a healthier one?  Does it mean you never have cookies in the house?  No!  But can it mean that you spend some time creating a menu that actually includes vegetables?  Yes!  Can it mean that you find 10 recipes for vegetables that you will try this month on your family? Yes!  Can it mean you will finally invest in quality cookware that will actually help you enjoy cooking because it’s fast and easy clean up? Yes! (If you want to know which tools are the best, I can help you here!)  If you truly want to make a difference, have where you spend your time, energy, money and resources actually match up to what your priorities are.

How can you develop what you want to have happen?

Well, this is where you seek out an expert.  If you want to learn to cook fast and healthy family meals, I can help you with that.  You can even schedule a private cooking class in your own home with you and your friends.  If you are in need of a meal plan, I can help you with that too — just simply go to my personal menu planning site to get started.

What will help you grow?

Actually doing it and getting it done will make you stronger than ever before.  More confident than ever before.  Better than ever before.  You just “keep swimming” as Dory did on Little Nemo.  Connecting with the right expert, taking a class, and practicing and focusing on what you want and never giving up will get you to where you want to go.

If this inspired you to take action on your healthy kitchen makeover, I’m so happy!
