Down-To-Earth Dietitian – That’s Me!

As a nutrition expert who loves to teach kids the connection of fresh food to good health, I am eagerly awaiting garden season.  I have had a garden nearly all of my life, where even as a young child I was drawn into the garden to work with the dirt, plant the vegetables, pull the weeds and develop a sense of pride over what I grew.  I think there was a secret that my parents were well aware of at the time – if you teach your kids how to grow something, you will not only grow plants, you will grow a healthier child.

I know as I look back that those early experiences paved the way for me to choose nutrition and dietetics as a career.  As a Down-To-Earth Dietitian, I know that I can help other families create similar memories.

From the time my own children were little, I have had the desire to get them involved in our own garden because I know from my experiences that this can make a tremendous difference in their lifelong eating habits.

In fact, some of the things gardens can do include:

  • Increase willingness to try new foods when learning about them and exploring how they grow
  • Improve attitude towards fruit and vegetables
  • Enhance the consumption of fruits and vegetables at mealtimes
  • Improve life skills including working together for a common goal
  • Instill knowledge, appreciation and respect for nature that lasts into adulthood

Why garden with kids?  Those early nutrition education opportunites are few and providing these food experiences will make a lasting impact on your child like no other.  What parent doesn’t want their child to be healthy?  Gardening as a family is a tremendous way to start that path to health.  I am a “Down-To-Earth Dietitian”, and I can help you and your family to memories that will last a lifetime.

What will you be growing with your family?
