Gardening for a Healthy Plate Virtual Course

Dietitian Gardening

Did you know a garden has the power to transform a family’s eating habits (and even our own eating habits, as moms!!)? That’s why I’m offering a brand new virtual course called Gardening for a Healthy Plate

I just can’t get it out of my head how much power we hold and may not even realize it! As moms, we hold all the influence with a family’s eating habits.  Yes, that’s right, it’s on us!  Maybe more than you bargained for, but think about it…moms generally purchase the food, make the meals, decide what’s in the snack cabinet/drawer, put dinner on the table, say yes or no to the question “Can I eat that?”.  (Not discounting dads here, but the research supports this!)  The University of Minnesota completed a study called “Project Eat”, and they noted overwhelmingly, it’s the mom who has the most influence on a family’s food/eating habits.  What does that mean?  Moms can greatly affect health by what she puts on the table.

That’s why I want to offer this four week online virtual course — Gardening for Healthy Plates.

Why a Gardening for Healthy Plates course?

I want to share with you what I’ve learned not only as a lifelong gardener, but also as a developer and teacher of the award winning garden program for kids.  That program transformed how hundreds of kids in my community both ate and thought about fruits and vegetables. Read the story of the Sprouts Get Out and Grow Garden from the Austin Daily Herald.  (Did you know that Swiss Chard became their favorite vegetable?)

I want to share how nutrition and gardening go hand in hand as a registered dietitian nutritionist.  How what we grow can become a part of our meals, and that food we grow can transform our plates.  I also believe how we take care of the garden can metaphorically be similar to how we take care of ourselves.  (Did you know that the idea of compost can not only transform a garden’s growing power, a similar compost recipe can also transform our growing power?)

I’ll use my master gardener certification to guide you to the simple steps of planting a garden.  I will use my 17 years of registered dietitian nutritionist experience to empower you to transform your family’s eating habits through gardening.  I will use my mom and garden teacher expertise to inspire you to create the family vegetable garden you’ve always wanted and the legacy you want to leave your children.
