Welcome to day 4 of smoothie week!  Wow, if you have been following along, you have now made two smoothies and hopefully, your family loved them! You are well on your way to getting fruits (and vegetables to come) into your family’s day without much effort.  The key is really just being prepared and stocking your refrigerator and freezer in the right way.  Read on for some shopping tips.

Golden Fruit Smoothie

Makes 40 ounces (5 -8 ounce glasses)

What you need:

  • 3 cups frozen golden fruit (for example: peaches, pineapple, mango)
  • 2 ripe bananas
  • 2 (6 ounces each) containers strawberry Greek yogurt
  • 1 cup strawberry banana juice puree (Bolthouse Farms or Naked Juice brands work well) or mango juice puree

All it takes:

  1. Add golden fruit, bananas, yogurt and juice puree to a blender.  Blend for one minute or until ingredients liquified.

Now this is my husband’s favorite smoothie.  It seems each person in my family has their special favorite!  But that doesn’t mean they won’t drink the others as well.  It just creates a lot of fun variety!  To make sure you are prepared for all these different smoothies each week, here are a few shopping tips:

  • Buy a variety of frozen fruits.  My favorites are sliced peaches, pineapple chunks, mango chunks, whole strawberries, blueberries, blackberries.  I pretty much keep all of them in my freezer ALL of the time.  Then there is no excuse to not make a smoothie and I am prepared to make various flavors.
  • Buy a bag of over-ripe bananas.  Usually, you can find a bag of 20 or so over-ripe bananas in the produce section for a significantly lower price than regular bananas.  Why does this matter?  You can peel and freeze in pairs for an easy way to create a sweet smoothie.
  • Have a variety of liquids available.  I tend to use the juice purees found in the produce section, like Naked Juice or Bolthouse Farms because they just add a little richness (without any added sugar) to the smoothie.  Milk is something I use as well, it can thin out the smoothie so it’s easily slurped through a straw while adding a great source of calcium and vitamin D.
  • Stock up on yogurt.  Whether you choose Greek or regular (although, I have made a case for Greek in a previous post), make sure you always have it in your refrigerator.  Try a variety of flavors to mix up the flavors of your smoothie.  Get creative.  You can even buy the 32-ounce size tub to save some money.
