Homemade Scone Mix
Ever purchase something and think, “How could I make this at home and save some money?” Not too long ago, I received a sample of a scone mix in the mail and made it within days of arrival because I love scones. But come to find out, I have to order online if I want to purchase it because it isn’t sold locally. I decided to break down the ingredient list to see if I could replicate it at home, because if you want to know what’s in something, you’ve got to find out what it’s made of.
Breaking down the ingredient list actually isn’t as hard as you might think. Here are a few tips I came up with to help you do this as well:
- Ingredients are always in descending order. That means the ingredient with the most volume will be at the top of the list and the least will be at the bottom of the list.
- Take out a standby cookbook that’s tried and true. America’s Test Kitchen or Better Homes and Gardens get my vote.
- Start comparing ingredients in the recipe to the ingredients on the package. You will get some clues here on approximate measures of ingredients.
- Jot down a few notes on the differences.
- Experiment by actually making the recipe. And be okay with making it twice or three times to get it right!
These are the steps I took to creating a homemade scone mix. I can mix up the dry ingredients, store it in airtight glass jars in my pantry and attach a little recipe card for directions for a quick and easy breakfast or brunch. Or it can be a gift for a friend or neighbor.

I hope you do Deanna! They are delicious right out of the oven!
Mmm, out of most pastry type recipes, scones have to be one of my favorites as I love the more “bread-like” texture 🙂
