Kids Garden Ideas

Looking for ideas to get kids interested in gardening? Lucky for me, my kids can’t wait to get in the garden. I can’t say it’s always been easy to entice them to get out and grow, but here are some ideas that have helped my family:

  • Design your garden using what your kids love. My kids happen to LOVE Lego’s (future Lego designer in our midst I think) and the minute I suggested to my son that we could design a garden using them, he brought up the thousands of brightly colored pieces and got to work. We were able to creatively see and feel how the garden would look this year – especially with the new addition of a stone walkway through the middle.

  • Read gardening books together to gather ideas.  This year, we are creating our own version of The White House Garden, based on the research we did in the recent book “American Grown” by First Lady Michelle Obama.  I had this book on pre-order through Amazon because I was that excited about it.  It’s full of great pictures and commentary on why the garden was created.  It also very much reminded me of my own story of why I love gardening with my kids.
  • Gather great resources and learn together.  One of my favorite places to go for garden information is Burpee Home Gardens.  They have a great FREE resource to start your vegetable garden.
  • Check out the great ideas on the Kids Gardening website.  Go to your local library to check out some great books about how food grows, how it gets to the supermarket and so much more.
  • Take your kids to the seed aisle of your local nursery.  Pictures are worth a thousand words and seeing the seed packets full of their favorite colorful vegetables can entice kids to want to grow them.
  • Start young and make it fun.  Invite their friends to a garden party and have fun in the garden together.  The younger you start, the more natural the habit will become.
  • Ask your kids what their favorite food is and then figure out what you could plant to help them grow their own food.  Once the plants are ready to be harvested from, have your kids cook with you to make that favorite recipe.
  • Have your kids be responsible for one task in the garden each week.  Whether it’s watering, weeding or harvesting, it doesn’t matter.  What matters is that having a job makes a child feel important.

Our plan for fun includes this garden.  How sweet of my kids to place the four of us in the garden together, working and having fun together!

What will you do to get a garden growing together with your family?
