Teachers and Moms Will Love These Healthy Classroom Birthday Treat Ideas

Fruit Kabobs

Birthday treats.  It’s a love/hate thing.  Of course I love to make my kids’ birthday cake for their birthdays – which means at home, but I really hate the part about bringing cake into the classroom.  It seems that there are so many birthdays through the school year that my kids end up having cake every week – how special does birthday cake become?  And many schools now have rules about individually packed items only.  So what’s a mom to do?

I love helping my kids think up unique and tasty ideas that are naturally colored (i.e. fruit and vegetable related) for their birthdays.  It’s just part of being a mom, who also happens to be a dietitian.

Here’s my tried and true list: Teachers and moms will love these healthier classroom birthday treat ideas!

(Some will require a little assembly on the kids or teachers part in the classroom, but it is really minimal.  I always offer to assist in the classroom during treat time to make it go a little smoother.)

·        Build your own kabob (alternating strawberries and grapes), I just brought the fruit in its original package and then washed it for them once there and actually came in to help the process go a little smoother.  Brought vanilla yogurt as a dip.  Super simple.  Use straws or pretzels so the sticks don’t become weapons!

·         Individual fruit pizzas, ordered lunchbox size sugar cookies (smaller size) and brought light whipped topping and had ordered cut mixed berries (from Hy-Vee) in a separate container.  I just helped them put it all together during class.  They loved this!

·         Strawberries with chocolate flavored light whipped topping.

·         Fruit and yogurt parfait (Hy-Vee will make these in advance for you if you call ahead to order).

·         Trail mix: Bring a bag of popcorn, dried fruit and mini crackers – just have them mix in the classroom.  Provide bowls, Dixie cups or bags for kids to put some in.

·         This one requires a little extra: Get ice-cream cones, have them fill them in the classroom with mixed, pre-cut fruit (that the supermarket has cut for you) and drizzle with a spoonful of vanilla yogurt.

Of course the best thing to do is check with the teacher before hand to make sure any of these ideas would work.  My luck has always been good!  And the kids in the class really enjoy something different than a cupcake.
