After a Sprouts Planting Party on May 3, our Sprouts – Get Out and Grow Kids Garden is really growing! We planted 20 different vegetables and herbs this year and everyone is looking forward to the harvest we will reap throughout the season! The kids were so enthusiastic to plant everything that needed to be planted – they couldn’t wait to get their hands in the soil. As parents, its easy to see working in the garden as work, but it can be pure joy for both adults and especially kids. It is a natural learning opportunity in so many ways, I can’t wait to foster more learning experiences this summer with a whole new “crop” of kids! Here are a few things we planted:
- Burpee Boost Cherry Punch Tomatoes – these plants (and others) were courtesy of Burpee Home Gardens and the local grower for Burpee – The Plant Peddler. Thank you for helping make our garden grow! We are going to love growing the healthiest vegetables.
- Burpee Boost Sweet Heat Sweet-To-Spicy Pepper
- Sunflowers – which will grow to 12 feet tall! These will be a real treat for the kids, especially to see them peaking over the top of our fence.
- Burpee Boost Healing Hands Lettuce Mix
We are already gearing up for the first Sprouts kids class which will be on June 13th in the garden. The first class will focus on “Growing the Rainbow” and kids will experience the how and why to do just that, with the help of interactive planting stations, cooking something that is ready to harvest from the garden and a visit from a scientist from The Hormel Institute. We are thoroughly excited to partner this year with The Hormel Institute as they are a world-renowned cancer research facility that studies cancer-fighting foods, some of which we are growing right in the Sprouts Garden!
I am so lucky to be living out a dream that I had more than 4 years ago – to teach kids the connection of fresh food to good health by growing and cooking in the garden.
